Motorcycle & Helmet Laws
Helmets are required for riders under 18 years of age. Review all South Dakota motorcycle laws. For motorists, seat belts are required for drivers and front seat passengers, as well as any occupant under 17.
Speed Limits
South Dakota has more than 82,000 miles of roads to enjoy. So don’t let a ticket ruin your trip. Make sure you’re staying safe by staying under the speed limit.
- Interstates: speed limit of 80 mph with a minimum speed of 40 mph. Speeds are reduced in urban areas.
- Secondary Highways: speed limit of 65 mph unless otherwise posted.
- Scenic Highways: most scenic highways throughout the Black Hills have reduced speeds due to bridges, curves and limited visibility.
- City Streets: speed limit of 25 mph unless otherwise posted. All school zones and obstructed intersections are 15 mph.
